Workshop on Power Dynamics in Institutional Complexity

Workshop on Power Dynamics in Institutional Complexity

Dear colleagues,

We are inviting applications from early career researchers (PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, or untenured professors) to take part in a workshop on “Power Dynamics in Institutional Complexity.”The workshop will take place in Québec City on September 20-21, 2024.

The theme: In the field of international studies, “power” is arguably the most extensively discussed concept, while “institutional complexity” is probably the concept that has gained the most prominence in the last decade. The interplay between these two concepts, however, has not been thoroughly examined. Questions remain regarding whether institutional complexity benefits or hinders the most powerful actors, the strategies employed by rising powers to maneuver through such complexity, the type of power distribution that is most likely to increase complexity, and the new forms of gaining or projecting power within an institutional framework. The workshop is designed to deepen our understanding of the relationship between power, in its myriad forms, manifestations, and degrees, and institutional complexity.

Short research notes: The workshop will discuss short, dense, and rough research notes, ranging from 3000 to 5000 words. These contributions may be theoretical and/or empirical.  They should be exploratory and thought-provoking. We aim to gather a collection of research notes that are sufficiently developed to serve as the basis for group discussions, yet are still at an early stage to benefit from a broad spectrum of feedback. The aim of notes should be to stimulate group discussions, not necessarily to inform participants about research results.

The workshop format: Research notes will be circulated a few weeks before the event, with the expectation that participants will have read all submissions in advance. During the workshop, each research note will undergo a thorough group discussion, initiated by remarks from an assigned discussant, followed by an open discussion among all attendees. Authors will have the opportunity to speak at the conclusion of their paper’s group discussion. This format is designed to facilitate in-depth discussions, provide authors with comprehensive feedback, and enable participants to engage with one another in an informal setting. We have organized more than 15 workshops based on this format and all have been very fruitful experiences (see:  www.wire-series.com

The location: Québec City has earned a UNESCO World Heritage status for its unique architecture and atmosphere. Travel magazines frequently rank Québec City among the world’s premier destinations. The city is particularly breathtaking in late September when the maple trees display their vibrant autumnal colors.

Cost and funding: There is no registration fee. All meals and accommodation (3 nights) will be covered for all participants. Limited funding might be available to assist with travel expenses for individuals without access to research funds, depending on obtaining the necessary funding.

Next steps: To submit a proposal, please e-mail an abstract (200 words) and a full CV to crc-ipe@pol.ulaval.ca by April 1st, 2024. We are happy to provide further information if you have specific questions.

Workshop organizers: Guillaume Beaumier (ENAP) and Jean-Frédéric Morin (Université Laval)
